Strategic Importance of the North

with the Hon Richard Marles MP, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Defence

It was a privilege to host Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles MP in Cairns for a high-level discussion on the strategic importance of Northern Australia.

The conversation reinforced Far North Queensland’s critical role in defence and security, particularly in strengthening the Australia-Pacific partnership.

One key takeaway was the growing importance of critical minerals and rare earths—a sector where Far North Queensland can play a pivotal role in securing Australia’s economic and national interests. We also highlighted the Common User Facility within the Cairns Marine Precinct as a transformative piece of infrastructure. This project is essential for supporting defence, maritime, and regional economic growth. Our advocacy remains firm: we need full funding and expedited delivery.
