A LIFELINE TO THE REOTE FAR NORT
Dangerous sea conditions, giant tides, high costs and inbound freight in all shapes and sizes make operations challenging for Northern Australia’s largest shipping provider, Sea Swift.
All can affect schedules and delivery costs for the many small communities in the Torres Strait who rely on them.
But for the 500-strong organisation the STARS align when it comes to why they continue to do what they’ve been doing since 1987.
Sea Swift follows a values system – Safety, Teamwork, Accountability, Respect and Service – and has been built from the ground floor up.
It’s what drives Sea Swift’s mission to be the most reliable and valued shipping partner for some of the most remote and isolated communities in the country.
Executive chairman Chris Pearce and COO Leanne Hulm are proud of their team and what they do on a daily basis.
“It’s fun,” Chris said. “We love what we do.”
Sea Swift has a fleet of purpose-built vessels with depots across Queensland and the Northern Territory.
In January its cargo ship Newcastle Bay was called on to deliver food supplies for communities affected by ex-tropical Cyclone Koji. ⛈
Chris said the journey, made possible by Coles supermarket and the State Government, highlighted the benefits of a “sea highway”, an alternative to the Bruce which was flood-prone, dangerous and expensive to maintain and upgrade.
“Shipping is an efficient, scalable and dependable way to move large volumes of freight,” he said.
Certainly a lifesaver when the tough times strike.
