State Budget Breakfast with the Hon Curtis Pitt MP
Tuesday 21 June, Hilton Hotel Cairns
Attended by over 100 of Cairns and the greater region’s business and civic leaders, the event provided the State Treasurer, the Hon Curtis Pitt MP, the opportunity to delve more deeply into the detail of the recently announced budget and what is means in respect to the Tropical North Queensland regions and our identified key asks.
During the event the Minister revealed the State Government’s commitment to one of our long term 8 + 8 advocacy issues, the Cairns Shipping Development Project. The proposal of a new scheme confirmed at the event will see the fast tracking of the dredging of the Cairns shipping channel to allow cruise ships up to 300m-long to dock at the city’s port.
The project is estimated to cost $120 million and will slash the amount of dredging from 4.4 million cubic metres to 1 million cubic metres with all spoil to be dumped on land. On competition of the dredging, the port will now be able to access mega class ships along with allowing bigger capacity naval, fuel and sugar ships to use the harbour.
