Leena is an accomplished leader\, known for her ability to build relationships with stakeholders and staff bringing people together to align to a shared strategic vision. Leena is committed to helping improve the health outcomes of the local community\, particularly those most vulnerable. \nProfessor Sarah Larkins is an experienced research leader\, general practitioner and Dean\, College of Medicine and Dentistry\, James Cook University\, comprising disciplines of Medicine\, Dentistry\, Pharmacy\, Public Health and Tropical Medicine and Biomedicine and Molecular Cell Biology. As a clinician researcher\, Sarah has particular skills and experience in health systems and workforce research and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health research and is a recognised expert in social accountability in health professional education. \nSarah’s particular focus is on collaborating to improve equity in health care services for underserved populations\, particularly rural\, remote\, Indigenous and tropical populations\, and on training a health workforce with appropriate knowledge\, attitudes and skills for this purpose. She currently serves as the Convenor\, Clinical Leadership Group for the NHMRC-recognised Tropical Australian Academic Health Centre and a member of the National Health and Medical Research Council Research Committee for this triennium.

He was also chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Treaties.\nAngus was promoted to Assistant Minister to the Prime Minister with special responsibility for Cities and Digital Transformation in February 2016. He was reappointed to the frontbench after the 2016 Federal election and became Minister for Law Enforcement and Cyber Security in December 2017.\nAngus was promoted to Cabinet as the Minister for Energy in August 2018\, and reappointed as the Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction in May 2019. In October 2022 Angus added the Industry portfolio to his duties\, serving as the Minister for Industry\, Energy and Emissions Reduction until May 2022.\nIn June 2022 Angus was appointed as the Shadow Treasurer.\nPrior to entering parliament in 2013 Angus was a Director at Port Jackson Partners where he was a strategy and business advisor on the resources\, agriculture\, energy and infrastructure sectors. Prior to this he was a partner at global consulting firm McKinsey & Co.\nAngus has a Bachelor of Economics (First Class Honours and University Medal) and a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) from the University of Sydney. He also has a Master of Philosophy in Economics from Oxford\, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar. His thesis was in the field of competition policy.\nIn his private capacity Angus has founded or advised on a number of small\, fast growing start-up businesses\, particularly in the agriculture sector.\nHe lives at Goulburn with his wife Louise. DESCRIPTION:Advance Cairns is pleased to join with James Cook University to investigate the implications of the Federal Government’s 2023 Defence Strategic Review for Far North Queensland in an important dialogue with one of the review’s co-authors. \nThe Defence Strategic Review sets the agenda for ambitious\, but necessary reform to Defence’s posture and structure. Hear from review author Professor Peter Dean on Australia’s strategic circumstances necessitating the re-posturing of Defence\, particularly an enhanced network of bases\, ports and barracks across northern Australia. \nFollowing Professor Dean’s presentation\, guests will have the opportunity to engage in a Q&A discussion with key industry leader Olav Groot\, CEO of Norship\, facilitated by Advance Cairns CEO Jacinta Reddan. \nGuest Speaker: \nProfessor Peter J. Dean PhD SFHEA is the Director\, Foreign Policy and Defence at the United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney. \nPreviously Professor Dean was the University of Western Australia’s (UWA) first Chair of Defence Studies and the inaugural director of the UWA Defence and Security Institute. He served as a Pro Vice-Chancellor at UWA\, where he received a Vice Chancellor’s Commendation for Outstanding Leadership\, and held a number of senior roles at the Australian National University’s College of Asia and the Pacific and Strategic and Defence Studies Centre. \nMost recently Professor Dean was Co-Lead of the 2023 Defence Strategic Review (DSR) Secretariate where he served as senior advisor and principal author for the Independent Leads\, His Excellency Professor the Hon. Stephen Smith and Air Chief Marshal Sir Angus Houston AK AC AFC (Retd). \nProfessor Dean has an extensive background in military and defence studies. He was the founding editor of the Melbourne University Press Defence Studies Series\, is a member of the Editorial Boards of the Australian Army Journal\, Global War Studies and the Military Studies Journal and a former managing editor of the journal Security Challenges. \nAn international award-winning author he has authored numerous books\, policy papers and articles on the US-Australian alliance\, Australian defence policy\, military operations and regional security. \n \n
