CAIRNS LOOKS TO FLY HIGHER IN CHINA

Increasing direct air links between Cairns and China is top of the agenda for Beijing Consulting Group (BCG), Tropical North Queensland’s newly appointed Aviation and Economic Development specialist in China.

In comprehensive presentations to the TTNQ Board, Cairns Regional Council and Advance Cairns Edward Smith, BCG’s Managing Director outlined the region’s push to expand charter flights beyond Chinese New Year and strengthen links with major Chinese airlines with the long term objective of scheduled services direct to Cairns.

Tourism Tropical North Queensland Chief Executive Officer, Rob Giason said “As the global economic crisis bites, it’s important that we focus on leveraging as much benefit as we can out of those markets which are still growing.

“The Chinese economy is still expected to grow by more than six per cent over the coming year.  Combine that with a 30 – 40 per cent increase in the value of the Chinese currency against our dollar, and it’s obvious Cairns and Tropical North Queensland should be leading the charge in China.

“Our region was ahead of the pack in getting a foothold in China, and thanks to Cairns Regional Council’s foresight, TNQ will remain a major competitor for the Chinese visitor.  Getting planes and increasing air access is the most important goal to aim for right now.”

As well as working closely with the aviation sector, BCG will be raising the profile of Tropical North Queensland with the media and traveling public to attract education, tourism, commercial and conference travel to TNQ.  They will also identify business-to-business matching opportunities for TNQ companies in China.

“Two-way trade, attracting investment and identifying export leads are key activities” said Ross Contarino, CEO of Advance Cairns.  “BCG will enable us to make immediate responses to opportunities.”

Mr Smith met with a wide cross-section of the region’s political, business, education and commercial leaders during his three day visit.

Mr Contarino added: “In the short time Ed was here he took on numerous requests from the various stakeholders visited – all of which see great potential in increasing the region’s profile in China.”

Cairns Mayor Val Schier said “BCG has more than 15 years experience working with the Australian Government and private enterprise in China.  This strong emerging market can reap great benefits for our region and BCG’s contacts will be invaluable.  Council funding of $100,000 made this representation possible and we are very pleased to be involved.”
