A New Deal for Cairns – Phase 2
Where to now?
Almost eight months have passed since the New Deal team launched ‘A New Deal for Cairns – The Relief, Recovery and Reform Plan’ and the team has revisited their agenda because unfortunately, Far North Queensland continues to find itself under significant economic stress. It still has the highest unemployment rate in Australia; the construction industry is almost at a standstill; tourism remains soft; and business confidence, while it has picked up slightly, is still at an all-time low.
The New Deal’s plea to the State and Federal governments is once again to respond positively and urgently to their proposed initiatives, and then continue to work with them on developing a more comprehensive and ongoing “Cairns Economic Recovery Plan” to get the region’s economy back to where it needs to be, and to allow us to become a key part of a northern Queensland economic powerhouse.
In the words of Bill Kelty at a recent Keep Australia Working Forum in Cairns, the New Deal team is committed to ensuring our region is not left behind in Australia’s recovery.
The details of ‘A New Deal for Cairns – Phase 2′ are currently being determined, and will be released shortly.
